Forward Head Posture a.k.a. Text Neck: Part 1

One of the things I commonly see in my office is someone with poor neck and head posture.  When looking at someone from the side, the ears should line up directly over the shoulders.  Most people have their head well forward of that like a donkey reaching for the carrot attached to the stick.  This is commonly called forward head posture, anterior head carriage, text neck, reader’s neck, or scholar’s neck.  I will add, it is seems to be a growing problem in today's world! 0825222001526149809.jpg

 When the head is forward, it shifts the center of gravity thereby placing more pressure on the lower neck and upper back.  For each inch forward, it approximately doubles the amount of pressure placed on the lower neck and upper back.  This pressure tends to lead to neck pain, back pain, and headaches.0390116001526149823.jpg

Due to a couple of Laws’, (Wolff’s Law & Davis’ Law) which say the same thing, but about different tissue: “Our body will remodel according to the forces it encounters”, we over time change our bones, muscles, and ligaments to accommodate to our poor posture.  This viscous cycle continues throughout our life if not corrected! 

Next time you’re at the store and see the elderly person hunched over, recognize they did not get that posture over night.  It was a result of their body adapting to the force it encountered over time.  We can call that force gravity!  

In my office, I provide treatment and education to help combat this from happening.  Unfortunately, once the damage has been done, you really cannot go back, but there is still hope we can halt this process from continuing, or at the least, slow the progression down.  You only have one body; there is no better time to take care of it than NOW!
